It is difficult to describe what Train Dreams is about. The film follows Robert Grainier, an itinerant worker who works in the lumber industry. He falls in love with Gladys Olding, and they build a cabin in the woods together.
If I gave away any more plot points, I’d severely spoil the movie. But what I can say is that Train Dreams is a deeply introspective movie. It’s about what makes life worth living, growing old, and the persistence of the human spirit in lieu of a cruel, inhumane world that tries to take away our humanity.
Train Dreams is a new contender for one of my favorite movies of all time.
